Mon, 8 Dec 1997 Kim Bostrom USA I think we should all recognize the debt owed to countries that have saved/preserved the relics of the past, from whatever nation. However, in an effort to reinstate a sense of personal history in the peoples of the world, these relics should be returned to their places of origin, after it has been determined by an impartial committee that the country of origin can adequately protect and display the relic to any who wish to view it.
Mon, 8 Dec 1997 Michael C. Adams USA Please return the feather crown and accept the replica. It is the only decent thing to do.
Mon, 8 Dec 1997 Judith Kadish U.S.A. You have done a wonderful job in preserving and protecting the Kopilli Ketzalli. However, after 450 years I believe it is now time for the feather crown to be returned home.
Mon, 8 Dec 1997 Lawrence Hutchings USA I am proud to sign the petition to return the cultural heritage of the Aztecs to Mexico.
Tue, 9 Dec 1997 Karen A. Peters U.S.A.
Wed, 10 Dec 1997 John Jacq Australia I feel the Kopilli Ketzalli is getting rather bored of its enforced exile in Austria. It wants to go back to Anahuak, the high plateau region of Mexico. So I am not signing this petition on behalf of the Aztecs, nor in opposition to the Austrians, but on behalf of the Quetzal bird who wants its feathers back.

Mon, 29 Dec 1997 Benjamin Munoz and Janet V. Henson-Munoz US We believe that the Crown was taken illegally and is the rightful property of Mexico.
It is their right to own it because it contains their spiritual heritage. Just as the property of the Jewish people was taken illegally in WW II and stored in Austrian banks so too was this crown taken illegally and should be returned.

Wed, 7 Jan 1998 Jennifer L. Hillman USA While a relious object may be considered art, it is formost a physical manifestation of a belief system held by a group of people. It is only through the eyes of the believers that the religous object can reveal its true beauty and power. The Crown belongs in the land from which it was created from and held by those that love it...

Por algún lado y en algún momento hay que comenzar a desfacer los errores; gestos, símbolos y culturas tienen que volver a significar en este mundo que es uno y múltiple.

Mon, 15 Nov 1999 Francisco Mendez J. USA I know that what I feel inside of me, ever since I found out that the musuem in Austria, does not want to return this beautiful headdress that belongs to my people, the Aztecs, is because the same blood that ran thru these strong and intelligent men and women, runs in my veins. I feel anger, strong sadness within me, and with all sincerity I cannot wait till that day, in which the Austrian government returns to Mexico, what is respectfully theirs. Thank You

Thu, 16 Dec 1999 Ingar M. Gundersen Norway I think this is a good initiativ, and a very importent one. This concernes many more than just the native americans in Mexico, but many cultures in the rest of America, and the whole world as well. During the centuries the europeans have stolen tons of treasures from ancient cultures, from America to Asia, most of it has now disappeared, but it is now the time for you to get back the remains, which is very importent for your culture. After all, it belongs to you and your culture, and it can never be any different.
Good luck!

Sun, 30 Jan 2000 Ce Ozomatli An area occupied by The United States of America (aztlan) Greeting,
I have seen the headress that is belived to be moctezumas very own. This is the most beautiful headresses which I have ever seen in my life. Perhaps this is the reason that you have chosen to keep it. But keep in mind that the headress was made in mexico, by mexican hands. For a mexican. Not for a european or for european eyes. This headress like many other things were stolen by the europeans from our land. Perhaps you could do what the rightful thing and send it back to its cradle, mexico. I have aswell heard that mexico is willing to give you a replice. This, I belive, gives you no other reason than to give it back. It has come to a represent the intrusion, and theft by your people of europe. Perhaps you all could show that you are sorry for all that has happened to us as a result of the theft, and give it back. I think that it would do more good if mexican children got the opportunity to view one of the great things of our culutre rather than a rich white man who views the people who made that crown as people of the past. We are here and we demand its return!!!!
thank you
Ce Ozomatli

Tue, 16 May 2000 Ilona Biro Canada I think it would be of immeasurable benefit to the world at large and to the Mexcian nation in particular if Austria were to return the crown of Moctezuma to its rightful owners in Mexico. There doesn't seem to be any reason for it to remain in Austria, a nation with its own treasures to exhibit and for the world to admire.
Thank you.
Sat, 3 Jun 2000 Kyle Hwang US
Wed, 21 Jun 2000 SCOTT BAILEY USA
Wed, 21 Jun 2000 Julie Yakes USA The time has come for old wrongs to be made right. Native peoples the world over have been at the mercy of the world's empires since the beginning of history. But just because a nation *can* do something does not necessarily mean that it *should*. Today, in a time when we are beginning to think of ourselves more as people of the Earth, rather than people of a nation, we *must* respect the rights and cultures of the other people we share this planet with. By holding onto something so precious and important to the Mexican people as the crown of Moctezuma, a part of their heritage forcibly removed from them so long ago, it puts a blight on the spirit of charity and goodwill that is so necessary in today's society. Please, please, return the crown to the descendants of those who fought and bled to protect it. Honor them, and honor yourselves for the giving.

That day is still to come when the majority of Chicanos of the Southwest and the rest of U.S., will wake up and have total control politically and stop the white imperalism that has been put upon us for nearly 500 years since the arrival of the Spaniards. This political power will also expand to Mexico and stop the corruption that exist and expel all Jewish bigots that currently influence Mexican politics and other groups that don't care for MExico or/and Mexicans. Until this day, we Mexican need to understand the meaning of life that it is much greater than just partying and having fun with the homies, there's more than that and we need to start now with an education, knowledge and awareness of our struggle and trying to work hard daily to overcome them for our benefits.

We are the largest minority, therefore, we should start now since we have a greater voice and power. In additon with our willingness and desire we can start taking control of our communities, cities and states.

With out enormous size of population in MExico and U.S. surpassing the border is all a matter of time when Mexica would again be the dominant power of America, but this can't and wont happen if we don't start to put our heads straight with education. Anything you do give it your best understanding for the enlightenment era that is to come for the Mexican and all full/half indegenous people of the America's.

Sat, 5 Jul 2003 Donna Reardon USA In June, I was able to travel to Mexico City for the first time in my 59 years. I had studied the nation in college and have always been fascinated by the history, especially since I have lived on the Mexican/US border for the past 38 years. I was distressed to learn, upon visiting the Anthropological Museum, that the glorious headdress of Montezuma was a replica and that the original was in a museum in Europe! This parallels the affront to the Greek people that the British Museum in London houses so many of their national treasures. The headdress of Montezuma could not possibly mean anything to the citizens of Austria. Please return it to its home.

Mon, 5 Jul 2004 monserrat mexico I have been recommending this website to all my friends.
Sun, 22 Aug 2004 Juan Diego Orozco United States of America When I was very small I remember visiting the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico City, and learning about my Mexican and indigenous roots. I was awestruck by how intelligent and advanced the Aztec civilization was. I saw the Calendar of the Sun (The Aztec Calendar) and marvelled at the sight and stared at its intricate detail. Then I proceeded to look at other artifacts and when I came across Montezuma's headdress (El Penacho de Montezuma) I could not believe the size and the color, and then the tourguide told us that this was just a replica and that the "real" Penacho was in Austria. I remember everyone in the tour including my parents and myself sighing, and feeling extremely ashamed and indignant. As I conjure up these feelings as I am writing this reply I feel sad, and teary-eyed. I feel a hurt in my heart and in the pit of my stomach. El Penacho de Montezuma belongs in Mexico not in some foreign land. I recall being in Vienna just last fall and wanting to see the Penacho but I just could not come to terms with myself by seeing it in a foreign land. I remember telling my friends that we really should not go and see it for fear of what a proud Mexican might do to get it back. My friends laughed because they thought I was joking, but I was dead serious. The blood that runs through my veins began to boil, and I am not a hot-head or an irritable person but I could feel Montezuma's pride, spirit and even anger being in this foreign land that had the possession of something so special to my people. I really hope that this National Treasure is returned so that when a small Mexican boy or girl or even a foreign tourist visits the Museum of Anthropology in Mexico they don't have to witness a "Replica" but the true Penacho de Montezuma in its true resting place. I fully support your cause, and if you need anything please email me. I have never been more adamant or passionate about something in my life.

Sincerely,
Juan Diego Orozco
Mon, 23 Aug 2004 Kathleen Troutt United States It seems only fit that the Austrian government should return such an important piece of history to the people of Mexico. Seems it being placed in an Austrian museum seems not only to decontextualize this sacred piece but in my opinion, it would never be regarded as important to the Austrians as it would be to the native peoples of Mexico.

Fri, 10 Dec 2004 Juan Silva Renaud USA While I can understand the concern of the Austrian people with regard to the preservation of the Kopilli Ketzalli, I urge the world to accept the fact that Mexico is a non-bellicose country, modern in many senses and perfectly capable of preserving its historical treasures for further generations. While fundamentalism abounds in many areas of the world, Mexico is a peaceful country, and as such would provide a safe abode for a proud piece of its heritage. Mexicans take great pride in their national heritage. One need only to look for a symbol of the Conquest in Mexico City. The Conquest represented by a miniature statue of Hernan Cortes, vis-a-vis statues and monuments of pre-Columbian grandeur, is proof the Mexican people reserve great reverence and esteem for their past.

Thu, 10 Mar 2005 Michael A Montgomery U.S.A. Return all of the native artifacts to the descendants of their creators. If we aren't trying to rewrite history anymore, and if we are moving towards a democratic land ownership free world then why must we continue to hide the facts of the past?

Wed, 16 Mar 2005 Chris Arkless Australia It seems to me that significant cultural artifacts, particularly those with strong symbolic importance such as the feathercrown, should be repatriated provided that such repatriation does not place the object at risk.
In the case of the feathercrown I have no doubt that Mexican museum conservators are as capable as any of ensuring its safety.
A quality replica, such as that offered, should be a sufficient display for the Austrian viewing public, to whom it presumably have only curiosity value.
Tue, 22 Mar 2005 Marcos Cuevas United States Mexico has been left with many open wounds. Justly returning the ancient and sacred relic to the Aztec Nation would provide at least one form of closure. Sat, 4 Jun 2005 Rose Marie Beckmann Virginia, USA A couple of years back, maybe in 1992 or 1993, i was visiting with my Dad in Salzburg, where Mr.Gomora and his group of Aztec dancers were demontrating for this cause. We highly appreciates his endeavor, since we are of VA Siouan. We had never heard of this matter about the feather crown and it made a very great impression on me how boldly yet peacefully they confronted the police who tried to stop the dance on this public place. They asked them to stop the drumming on the drums because of the noise level, so they did and continued drumming on the pavement, with great applause from the crowd gathered.

Thank you for making this petition available on the web. I have passed it on to our VA First Peoples Yahoo group http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Virginia_First_Peoples/message/3920 and hope many Indian brothers and sisters will sign this petition from all over Turtle Island.

Respectfully,

Rose Beckmann, Toano, VA

Tue, 17 Jan 2006 Maria D. (Angie) Gutierrez USA To Whom It May Concern:

I respectfully ask that the Priceless Headdress be returned to its country of origin, Mexico. The Headdress was taken without the concent of Mexico's native peoples, such is the nature of invasion and conquest of a nation. Mexico has had a tumultuous history and the descendants of its native peoples still suffer from the conquest. Returning the "Penacho" of Montezuma would be a symolic triumph of an indigenous hertigage that was virtually destroyed in the Americans. A symbolic truimph would bring national pride to indigeous descendants of the conquered peoples. I speak from the heart since I am myself a product of this conquest. I am a first generation Mexican-American who appreciates all cultures, but one cannot do so until one learns to appreciate one's own culture. Such is the case, the return of the Penacho would indeed increase in people appreciating their own culture and in turn acknowledging other world cultures. Is this not the new millennium? Should not all world cultures coexist peacefully? We are a global community in dire need of culture appreciation if we are to survive as a planet.

Please reconsider your decision to retain the priceless artifact, it would do more good in my parents' country of origin - Mexico, than in your wonderful and fascinating country who gave the world music and Mozart. Let us end the conquering of the native peoples of the Americans by returning their priceless and symbolic artifacts and not keep them as trophies of a rather shameful occurence of history.

Thank you very much for allowing a Mexican descendant to voice an honest request and opinion.

Tue, 31 Jan 2006 Csilla Balint Hungary Each nation should possess the treasures produced either way by their own ancestors. The era of colonization and robbery of colonizers is over, every nation is equal and there are no 'more equal' nations who would be entitled to possess the treasures of so called inferior nations. This era is over forever.

Nations that were big once are not big anymore and they should give up the notion of having been big once in the history and thus should repent for their bigness has been the result of oppression and bloodshed. Keeping the treasures of once oppressed nations is a continuation of this evil heritage of oppression. Spanish people and Habsburgs had nothing to do in Mexico so they abd their descendents have no right to keep sacred items that they robbed misusing their power.
